MARSTONS MILLS - At approximately 3:00 PM Barnstable Police were summoned by a 911 call to a home at 1567 Race Lane with a report that someone was threatening to kill themselves. That person was determined to be Michael W. Perry age 33.

The original call to police was made by one or more of 5 children who were in the basement of the home at the time. These children, who were not harmed, told the police that an adult identified as Michael Perry had a knife and was threatening his wife and also threating to harm himself.

The incident took place at the home of Perry's sister Anita Nakutis who is reportedly the wife of John Nakutis the owner of Nakutis Choppers of 73 Thornton Drive in Hyannis. John Nakutis was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Independence Park five weeks ago. Nakutis is still hospitalized and a family friend told HyannisNews in a phone call today that John took his first step today since his crash.

It was believed that there were two women in the home. One being Perry's wife and the other his sister. The women were not held as hostages and we in there voluntarily according to Sgt. Sean Sweeney, spokesman for the Barnstable Police Department. He told reporters in a late afternoon press conference at the scene that Perry was seen with the knife and at times he waved the weapon in a threatening manner.

Centerville-Osterville, Marstons Mills Fire Rescue was also on the scene to assist police as was NStar in case it was determined that it would be necessary to cut power to the home.

Police officers talking to the children in the basement by phone instructed them to leave the home through an entrance that would not require them to go upstairs. The were them removed to a safe location without incident. The home on Race Lane belongs to Michael Perry's sister.

At 3:45 PM the situation was ongoing and appeared to be a waiting game between Perry in the home and the SWAT team and Police negotiators. The goal, of course, is to resolve this situation safely without anyone getting hurt. Race Lane was blocked by police for several blocks in each direction for over 3 hours. No unnecessary personnel were allowed near the scene.

At approximately 6:15 PM, the situation ended peacefully when Michael W. Perry opened the door, came out of the house, and surrendered to police. He was arrested for assault and battery against his wife with the knife and simple assault also toward his wife. Michael Perry's Attorney John Manoog of Hyannis assisted in the negotiations with police leading to the peaceful surrender.

At the bottom of this page is an unedited video compiled at the scene including most of the Barnstable Police Press Conference. Shortly after the conclusion of the press conference, Michael Perry surrendered and is shown in the video handcuffed and being led to a C-OMM Ambulance for transportation to CCH for evaluation.  The video is approximately 21 minutes long.
