HYANNIS — Witnesses say two women were simply walking down Main Street when a stranger approached from behind, put one of them in a choke hold and said, “Give me your money…”
The victim that was in a head lock told police she felt something hard against her throat, thought it could have been a knife, but she couldn’t be 100% sure…
The suspect then allegedly tried to grab the victim’s purse, but that’s when her friend jumped in and a struggle ensued.
A nearby security guard for Torino’s Restaurant and Bar witnessed the mugging and immediately shone his flashlight in the girls’ direction. The attacker was then suddenly startled and took off running on foot without the purse.
Torino’s security then gave chase.
Barnstable Police Officer Matthew Lounsbury was on routine patrol on North Street when he observed the chase. Patrolman Lounsbury took action and stopped the suspect near the corner of North Street and Barnstable Road, roughly two blocks from the scene of the crime…
… other officers quickly responded to assist.
Patrolman Dennis Stampfl returned to the scene of the crime and took witness statements. It was then police learned that the suspect allegedly grabbed one of the women from behind during the alleged robbery, placing the victim in a choke hold/head lock…
The victims were described as young tourists here visiting for the season. They had thick foreign accents and HN distinctly heard one say, with a nervous laugh, “We’ll never come back here again.”
It remains uncertain for how long the attacker was stalking and sizing up her victims…
A Massachusetts State Trooper was also in the area and assisted Patrolman Stampfl searching the route of the security guard’s foot chase for the possible weapon… No knife, or other weapon was discovered during that search.
One source told HN that the suspect appeared to have bleeding track marks caused from injecting drugs, and that she mentioned she had just recently “shot up.”
Upon further investigation, police learned the suspect had 7 active warrants for her arrest. Most of the warrants were larceny related, with at least one for counterfeiting. Four were default warrants, and three were straight warrants. Several of the warrants were from New Bedford. Police also learned the suspect was considered a “fugitive from justice” in Virginia, and that she could likely be extradited to face charges there.
According to Barnstable Police, Sharon Misovic, age 49, will be charged with Unarmed Assault with Intent to Rob. The suspect is also known as Sharon Basset, formally from Hyannis, now with ties in Virginia… and other parts unknown. She reportedly told police she is staying with a friend here in Hyannis. Misovic reportedly has numerous aliases…

HN NOTE: What more can I tell you? This is no joke, and it has been getting worse and worse. Poverty, no jobs, homelessness, crime, substance abuse, inept leadership — a proverbial “Tale of Two Cities…” We need competent and effective town/city leadership and we need it now!
We can do better. We deserve better!
(Instead we’re still stuck with mostly contemptuous arrogance, near-aristocracy, and dangerous denial. More on that later…)
