*** AUDIO/VIDEO *** FIREFIGHTERS FIND FLAMES POURING FROM ORLEANS BIKE SHOP
ORLEANS FIRE-RESCUE MEDIA STATEMENT:
On Tuesday 29 October 2024, at 7:15 a.m. the Orleans Fire Department was dispatched to central station fire alarm activation at Idle Times Bike Shop located at 29 Main Street, Orleans. An Orleans Police officer was nearby and reported smoke and fire in the building. The first-arriving engine arrived within 5 minutes and found heavy fire and smoke venting out two windows of the first floor and extending to the second floor. The three-person crew led by Lieutenant Doug Edmunds immediately began to attack the fire. Additional firefighters from Orleans and surrounding communities responded to the scene to search the building for occupants, check for fire spread, and ensure the fire was completely extinguished. The fire was held to the first floor with no fire extension on the interior to the second floor. Crews also worked to ventilate smoke from the entire 2 story commercial building. In total 4 businesses were displaced from the building. No one was in the building at the time of the fire.
From Chief Geof Deering: “The early notification of the fire department from the alarm company, coupled with the rapid arrival and tactics of the first arriving engine company prevented this fire from causing more damage or requiring additional alarms.”
Crews remained on scene for approximately 4 hours.
The fire was investigated jointly by the Orleans Fire Department, Orleans Police Department, and Massachusetts State Police troopers assigned to the Fire Marshal’s office. The fire started on the first floor of the structure. The cause is currently being investigated. Lithium-Ion batteries for E-bikes were involved in the incident. It has not been determined whether they were the cause or contributed to the rapid-fire growth. Orleans firefighters were assisted at the scene by fire crews from Eastham, Brewster, Chatham and Harwich, and Yarmouth. Crews from Wellfleet and Hyannis provided station coverage in Orleans. The Orleans Department of Public Works, Orleans Water Department, Eversource, National Grid, Orleans Building Commissioner, and Wiring inspector responded to the scene. Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Communications Center coordinated the response.
