COTUIT, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN PHOTO NOTES] – Shortly before midnight last evening, a Barnstable Police patrolman was dispatched to an address on Main Street to “check on the status of a male operator who just reported that his motor vehicle was involved in an accident and flipped over,” according to radio transmissions. “The MVA occurred at the bridge on School Street, by the Mashpee town line, but he walked to his mom’s house” on Main Street, near the intersection with Route 28… an approximate walking distance of 1.45 miles, according to online maps.

The patrolman made contact with the alleged male operator at his mom’s house. And Cotuit FD Rescue was called to evaluate the male, but he was not transported.

Meanwhile, a Mashpee police officer was dispatched to assist the Barnstable Police in searching for the rollover crash. Minutes into the call, the Mashpee officer had crossed the town line and located a full-size pickup truck completely blocking the westbound travel lane and partially blocking the eastbound lane of School Street at the intersection with Santuit Road. Several Barnstable officers also arrived shortly thereafter.

School Street in the vicinity of the crash scene is a particularly dark and windy road, and officers positioned their cruisers and emergency lights to warn approaching vehicles and prevent another crash.

During the investigation, the male driver reportedly told police he had left the scene because he did not have access to a cellphone. He had reportedly self-extricated and walked the distance from the crash to his mother’s house, about 1.45 miles away, which would have taken him an estimated 25 to 30 minutes. Sometime after arriving at his mom’s house, police were notified of the crash and road hazard… which means his rolled-over, full-size pickup truck was sitting in the middle of School Street, in the dark, for approximately 30 to 45 minutes, according to estimates. A source pointed out that the operator could have knocked on the door of any of a number of homes between the crash scene and his mother’s house, but he didn’t.

Investigating officers made the decision to summons the driver on the charges of leaving the scene and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
