INITIAL HN REPORT:
ORLEANS – [DEVELOPING] – A man is in custody after leading state and local police on a 17 minute pursuit which ended in the parking lot of Nauset Auto Service on Bakers Pond Road at around 10:15 p.m. last evening.
According to David Procopio of the Massachusetts State Police, “At 9:58 PM a Trooper tried to stop a black Honda Fit for speeding on Rt 6. The driver initially stopped but then fled from the stop. We contacted Orleans Pd and asked to deploy stop sticks at the rotary.”
A second state police cruiser responded from a detail and joined the pursuit on Route 6 eastbound. And at least one Harwich Police cruiser also joined the pursuit shortly after the suspect vehicle had entered “Suicide Alley” between the old Exits 9B and 10, according to radio transmissions.
In the early minutes, the pursuit had reached higher speeds but gradually slowed to around 30 MPH prior to exiting Route 6 at the old Exit 12 in Orleans.
“An Orleans cruiser and MSP cruiser were positioned at the Exit,” according to Procopio.
The pursuit turned west onto Route 6A and traveled about a quarter mile before turning left onto Bakers Pond Road, where the pursuit ended in a parking lot. The driver was taken into custody and charged with Failure to Stop, speeding and other related charges. (Check back for suspect information and additional details regarding the additional charges he may be facing).
(During the pursuit a police cruiser was disabled after it rolled over some stop sticks, according radio transmissions.)
The suspect was transported to the state police barracks in South Yarmouth where troopers had difficulty removing him from the cruiser because he was said to have been passed out, according to radio transmissions. A Yarmouth FD ambulance and engine responded to the barracks to evaluate the suspect and assist troopers. The suspect was transported in an ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital for further evaluation before being released back into state police custody a short while later.
HN will update this story with suspect information and additional details as they become available. [DEVELOPING]
