INITIAL HN VIDEO & REPORT:
BOURNE, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES – DEVELOPING] – A state trooper was apparently assisting the driver of a disabled pickup truck on the Bourne Bridge early this morning when a Volkswagen Jetta suddenly struck the disabled pickup truck, according to radio transmissions.
It was a complicated scene to decipher, but according to radio transmissions, it sounds like the Ford pickup truck ran out of gas and stopped in a southbound travel lane heading onto the Cape. The driver left the disabled truck and went to get gas… and may have fallen off the sidewalk, hurting himself. First responders then went to the Cumberland Farms on the Cape-side base of the bridge to assist the motorist, now possibly injured from a fall. At some point, the state police called for a wrecker to tow the disabled Ford pickup (out of gas) off the bridge.
Moments later, a state trooper radioed to cancel the tow truck, saying that he was returning to the disabled pickup with the motorist and some gasoline…
… and then suddenly, the disabled pickup truck was struck by the white Volkswagen Jetta, which apparently had been traveling off-Cape on the Bourne Bridge.
Both southbound travel lanes on the bridge needed to be shut down as first responders were now working a crash scene. Both the Ford pickup truck and Volkswagen Jetta would now need to be towed from the bridge due to the moderate to heavy damage. At first, it was believed a state police cruiser may have also been struck but that turned out not to be the case…
The driver of the disabled Ford F150 pickup truck suffered a laceration to his right arm and was transported to Tobey Hospital in Wareham, according to radio transmissions.
The driver of the VW Jetta was complaining of wrist pain and was transported to Tobey Hospital as well, accompanied by a state trooper in the ambulance, according to radio transmissions. A source on scene confirmed that one of the drivers was taken into custody. [DEVELOPING]
