*** WATCH *** GAS LINE RUPTURED WHEN CAR STRUCK HYANNIS HOME [PLUS HN BONUS SNAPS]
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – Hyannis firefighters and Barnstable police rushed to Hinckley Road after a car slammed into a home and ruptured a natural gas line last evening, at around 8:33 p.m.
All occupants had evacuated the home and there were no reported injuries. A first responder on the scene said the brakes on the out-of-control vehicle were said to be not working properly…
There was a smell of leaking natural gas in the vicinity and National Grid was immediately informed of the emergency. Shutting off the flow of natural gas turned out to be complicated as workers first needed to locate the line and underground shut-off. Additional National Grid crews arrived and excavated above an in-ground shut-off valve. Once the gas leak was shut down, a tow truck operator carefully pulled the vehicle away from the mangled gas meter.
It took over two hours to finally make the scene safe. The home was left with a gaping hole in an outer wall… and the gas supply needed to remain shut off until repairs could be made.
The Barnstable Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash. All first responders had cleared the scene by 11:00 p.m. The following HN Video and images highlight the scene…
