SOUTH YARMOUTH – First there was a robbery at Cumberland Farms shortly before 11:00 p.m., and then, a short time later, there was a fatal crash after a vehicle was observed traveling at a high rate of speed away from an officer monitoring traffic nearby…
… according to a source, police believe the two scenes are completely separate, unrelated incidents.
OFFICIAL YPD MEDIA STATEMENT: Yarmouth Police investigate fatal crash on Old Main Street in South Yarmouth…
On Thursday July 23, 2020 at approximately 2312 hrs., Yarmouth Police Patrol Officer Dickey was parked on Old Main Street by Salt Works Lane in South Yarmouth monitoring traffic. At that time he observed a vehicle pass by his location traveling westbound at an extremely high rate of speed. Officer Dickey pulled his cruiser onto Old Main Street but was unable to maintain visual contact with the vehicle because of the extreme rate of speed at which it was traveling.
At approximately 2314 hrs. Officer Dickey radioed dispatch and advised that he located the vehicle and that it had crashed. The vehicle, which was occupied by the driver only, left the road and struck a tree on the south side of Old Main Street near River Street. The operator was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the operator is being held pending notification of family members.
The accident is under investigation by the Yarmouth Police Department Crash Reconstruction Unit with assistance from the Barnstable Police Department and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Criminal Investigations. The Yarmouth Police Department were assisted at the scene by the Yarmouth Fire Department and the Massachusetts State Police.

Yarmouth Police Investigate Robbery at Cumberland Farms in South Yarmouth
On Thursday July 23, 2020 at approximately 22:59 hrs. members of the Yarmouth Police Department responded to a report of a robbery at the Cumberland Farms Store at 1297 Route 28 in South Yarmouth. The caller reported that the suspect had fled the store after demanding and receiving money. The caller reported the suspect as a male, approximately 6 feet tall wearing a dark colored sweatshirt and a bandana or something similar on his face.
Yarmouth Police Patrol Officers and Detectives converged on the scene and conducted an intense search of the area but at this point have been unable to locate the suspect.

The robbery is not related to the fatal motor vehicle crash that occurred at 2314 hrs. on Old Main Street. The crash remains under investigation.
