*** WATCH *** First responders journey mile into deep dark woods to help stricken homeless man…
BARNSTABLE – Early Friday morning, Barnstable firefighters and police officers journeyed about a mile into the deep dark woods at the end of Independence Drive and Mary Dunn Road to help a stricken homeless man who was camped out there. As you will hear, the homeless man was in very bad shape, suffering severe stomach pains and possibly Hypovolemic shock, according to radio communications. According to Wikipedia, “Hypovolemic shock is a medical emergency and an advanced form of hypovolemia due to insufficient amounts of blood and/or fluid inside the human body to let the heart pump enough blood to the body. Hypovolemic shock could be due to severe dehydration through a variety of mechanisms or from blood loss.”
The rescue efforts required additional personnel and resources due to the difficulty traveling across unfamiliar terrain, deep into a dark wooded area. The large wooded area at the end of Mary Dunn Road extends behind the airport and as far as Willow Street in Yarmouth. It’s a popular area for hunters. It’s also a very isolated area, away from everything, a place where some autonomy seeking homeless individuals have been known to set up long-term camps. But it’s a long ways away from healthcare services or people who can help, and it’s a very good thing first responders reached this man when they did…
