*** WATCH *** Police and firefighters team up to free badly injured man from heavy wreckage…
BARNSTABLE – As you will see in the following HN video, police and firefighters worked together to free a badly injured driver from a rollover crash shortly after 1:00 a.m. this morning.
The single vehicle crash took down a utility pole and power lines on Phinney’s Lane, in the vicinity of Hathaway’s Pond (Phinney’s Lane needed to be completely closed down for the remainder of the morning…)
Barnstable Police patrol officers arrived first and used rudimentary tools in an effort to free the driver (who was the sole occupant).
The driver was bleeding and one of the patrolmen with previous city ambulance experience took initiative and began working with the patient while other patrol officers assisted….
Firefighters from Barnstable FD and a Hyannis FD heavy rescue crew responded to the scene.
It was a team effort to free the young man using jaws of life and other hydraulic devices…. and the patient was eventually freed from the heavy wreckage after a long extrication process.
He was then driven via ambulance to an off-Cape trauma center (helicopters were likely NOT flying due to weather at that time). His condition was described as being “priority one.” The Barnstable Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash and a Barnstable Fire Department ambulance crew handled the patient transport off-Cape.
