*** WATCH *** TRUCK DRIVES INTO KURT VONNEGUT’S OLD DOORSTEP IN NOW BLOSSOMING BARNSTABLE VILLAGE…
BARNSTABLE – [HN NOTES] – A pickup truck crashed into the front doorstep of a home – Friday, June 17, 2022 – that once belonged to Kurt Vonnegut, a well-known award-winning American writer who published short stories, plays, nonfiction and a total of 14 fictional novels, including Slaughterhouse-Five, a New York Times Best Seller that was made into an award-winning film. As the story goes, the adult male driver reportedly lost control of his pickup truck after a bunny rabbit suddenly darted across Route 6A, causing the vehicle to leave the roadway. The truck snapped a utility support pole and cables, losing a tire and just missing a fire hydrant. From there the out-of-control pickup climbed an embankment before murdering a well-loved rhododendron bush that had been fixing to blossom… and then it finally rammed-into the doorstep of the aforementioned residence that sits at the intersection of Route 6A and Scudder [Lane].
The doorstep was backed by what appeared to be stone and concrete that was connected to a foundation that sources say dates back to 1700s. All-in-all, the damage was fairly superficial and the entrance’s pillars escaped unscathed.
The driver was already walking around the scene on crutches… but the injuries that caused his obvious lameness were apparently not from Friday’s accident.
An Eversource lineman removed the damaged pole from the roadway and yelled “HEY, WHO ARE YOU?” at HN for holding a camera pointed in his general direction, sort of… (It’s a well-known natural fact that some linemen have a deep-rooted fear of any and all cameras. I don’t know if it’s a soul-stealing fear that has been known to manifest among ancient unsettle tribesmen not yet accustomed to civilization… but a friendly policeman stepped in and tried to soothe the poor noble beast, who appeared to be on the brink of some sort of emotional break… I chalked it up to cultural differences and made a note to myself to be especially gentle with the Eversource people going forward…)
The whole thing was quite an affair! But there were no injuries nor arrests… just a murdered rhododendron that nobody really seemed too concerned about. I remember feeling bereft about the poor plant and all those who had come to admire it.
“So it goes…”
