Cruiser lifted out of early morning jam… no injuries… [HN VIDEO]
HYANNIS – A Barnstable Police patrolman was on routine patrol in a dark unfamiliar area early this morning when his cruiser got hung up on a sharp drop-off he didn’t see. The crash happened on Town of Barnstable property, in an area near the Department of Public Works salt barn located off Bearses Way.
The patrolman was not hurt and he immediately called his supervisor to report the accident, according to Barnstable Police sources.
The cruiser was stuck in such a way that a heavy duty rotator wrecker needed to be called in to lift it up and free.
The accident is under investigation by a Barnstable Police Sergeant. A member of the Barnstable Sheriff’s identification unit also arrived to take photos of the incident. According to police sources, the incident appears to have been an accident.
HN NOTES: Based on HN’s observations, this morning’s incident appears to have been completely accidental. HN did not observe anything unusual or untoward. It appeared to have been something that could happen to anyone (in fact, I’ve done similar… on several occasions, in tricky areas while covering the news – didn’t need a heavy wrecker however, but that’s because I can almost lift and toss my “Little Blue Shark” around like balsa wood 😉 ). Minor accidents like these are not unusual for patrol officers who are called to check out areas dark and unfamiliar to them, under less than ideal conditions. It was, however, a Town of Barnstable police cruiser and for that reason it needed to be documented and is something the public is absolutely entitled to know about. On a brighter note, the damage did not appear to be too bad and the patrolman was able to drive the cruiser back to headquarters where he was looking at a buttload of paperwork no doubt. It’s also important to note that the police were very open and transparent when updating HN.
