DANGEROUS CROSSING: 24-year-old woman struck by unlicensed driver… [VIDEO]
HYANNIS – A 24-year-old woman was taken to CCH after being struck by a vehicle on Route 132, near the intersection of Hinckley Road…
At about 6:20PM, Barnstable police and Hyannis Rescue rushed to the scene of a pedestrian accident.
A woman was down in the roadway with a laceration to the head caused by an impact with the car’s windshield.
According to initial reports, the woman was thrown a short distance after being struck by a BMW traveling west on Route 132. She was reportedly thrown up over the hood of the vehicle, striking the windshield. She was conscious and able to talk with rescue workers (which is always a good sign). She was immediately taken to CCH.
The driver was talking with his wife sometime after the accident and she reportedly passed out from the shock of the bad news. An ambulance was dispatched to an address in Yarmouth to handle that situation. She reportedly will be okay…
The driver will be summoned into court for being unlicensed, according to police sources. The charge of “being unlicensed” is being considered a “subsequent offense” in this particular case. The driver will also not be charged with driving to endanger or any similar charge at this point. It happened on a dangerous stretch of road which is notorious for recent fatal pedestrian accidents. It’s a highly dangerous area for any individual to cross the four lanes of traffic on this very busy roadway. (It’s also uncertain if the low position of the sun in the sky may have also contributed to the crash.) One source told HN it is the type of accident which can happen to anyone on that particular stretch of road.
The driver of the vehicle told HN (in Spanish) that he was driving reasonably slow when the woman all of a sudden appeared in front of his vehicle. She apparently had been trying to cross at a brisk pace… He told HN that he slammed on the brakes the moment he saw her, but it was too late… and she came up over the hood and hit the glass (windshield).
The driver, who is originally from Ecuador, recently was studying in New York, and says he has been living in the Yarmouth area for the past eight months. He was very upset and concerned for the victim, showing a slight bit of relief when he learned she had been able to speak with medics… The vehicle he was driving, was reportedly registered to another individual and was towed from the scene. The driver’s uncle came from Yarmouth to pick him up from the scene.
The current condition of the pedestrian remains uncertain.
