UPDATED: Major three car accident… pedestrian struck when car rolled over… critical condition… 6 others injured… [RAW HN FOOTAGE]
The following Press Release was prepared by Sergeant Michael L. Riley of the Barnstable Police Department:
This afternoon, at about 3:53pm, the Barnstable Police responded to a serious motor vehicle accident involving three vehicles and a pedestrian at the intersection of Main Street and Cedar Street, Hyannis, which closed Main Street for about two hours. Officers from the Yarmouth Police Department assisted in closing Main Street at the Barnstable-Yarmouth town line.
Upon arriving, responding officer Spencer Jackson saw a Buick sedan had rolled on to its roof and slid off the roadway and into a man who was walking on the sidewalk on the south side of Main Street, seriously injuring him. Barnstable Officers provided medical assistance until the Hyannis Fire Department arrived and transported the pedestrian to the Emergency Center at Cape Cod Hospital. A Mazda sedan and a Toyota SUV were also involved in the accident. Barnstable Officers Lt. John Murphy, Sgt. David Myett, Officer Christopher Botsford, and Officer John Campbell also responded to assist.
The three occupants of the Buick, the two occupants of the Mazda, and the occupant of the Toyota were also transported to Cape Cod Hospital by the Hyannis Fire Department for what appeared to be non life threatening injuries.
Officer Jackson and Officer Matthew Lounsbury, a Barnstable Police Accident Reconstruction Officer, investigated the accident and determined the operator of the Mazda sedan had failed to yield when pulling out of Cedar Street on to Main Street in heavy traffic, and struck the side of the Buick, causing it to roll over, with the collision swinging the Mazda into the Toyota SUV traveling on Main Street.
The operator of the Mazda was cited for Failure to Yield, and the operator of the Buick did not have a valid license and was cited for Operating Without a License. Officer Lounsbury is continuing his investigation into other aspects of the accident.
