DRAMATIC RAW HN FOOTAGE: Young sailors in distress after 3 boats capsize during sudden wind gusts… all high school students accounted for…
HYANNIS – As you will see in the following dramatic raw HN footage, young sailors found themselves in distress this afternoon after 3 small sailboats capsized during sudden wind gust which seemingly came out of nowhere.
A source told HN three boats had capsized and a group of high school age sailors found themselves in the wind driven surf and strong currents of Lewis Bay.
All students were reportedly from the Saint John Paul II High School in Hyannis.
The sailing team went out when everything was calm…. but suddenly (as can happen in Cape waters) the winds kicked up in Lewis Bay and the students all found themselves capsized and overboard.
Hyannis FD and BPD scrambled, a fire boat was launched… but the students — some able to tow at least one of the sailboats with a launch — all managed to get themselves out of the water and to safety…
… and, at the time of this report, all students were accounted for! [DEVELOPING]
HN NOTE: Video is very RAW and jumpy at first… the strong wind was knocking me around, even though I was kneeling and bracing the camera against sharp gusts, trying for a steady shot… the video eventually settles down as the wind dies…
