FIRE SLAYERS: Hunt for a stubborn wall fire…
HYANNIS – Firefighters like to make sure they don’t have to come back and finish the job later, even when a fire initially appears as if it been extinguished…
Hyannis Firefighters responded to 20 Brookshire Road last evening for a fire which had started in the basement.
The fire was said to have started when an ember of incense fell into some laundry lint near the washer and dryer at about 4:30PM..
Residents extinguished the small fire and thought that was the end of it. But a few hours later they began to smell and notice smoke in the upstairs living areas.
Hyannis Firefighters arrived and began hunting an allusive invisible fire which had extended it’s way up from the basement into an area behind a first floor bathtub. The hunt then took firefighters behind some cupboards and eventually up behind a wall in a second floor bedroom.
Fire hose ran through the front door of the home and the hunt lasted for the better part of an hour.
Certain areas of the home’s interior were torn open and damaged by water. But despite the mess, the renters at the address were able to eventually return inside…
HN spoke briefly with Deputy Hyannis Fire Chief Dean Melanson and he was quite satisfied they had effectively tracked down and extinguished the pesky wall fire once and for all.
