UPDATE: MAN DRAGGED OVER 1500 FEET BY BMW STILL CRITICAL BUT MAY SURVIVE! [HN VIDEO]
UPDATE – 3/18/2018:
The following is the actual BPD press statement:
Pedestrian Accident
3/17/18 0340hrs.
On 3/17/18 at approx. 3:40 AM, Barnstable Police officers were called to Sea St. in Hyannis for a pedestrian vs. motor vehicle accident. Officers arrived to find the victim, 26-year-old Newman Galati of Seabrook Rd. Hyannis, lying on the pavement with extensive injuries consistent with being struck by a motor vehicle. Officers also encountered the operator of the motor vehicle involved, who was on-scene.
Initial statements indicated the operator was traveling on Seabrook Rd. and approached the intersection of Sea St. when he observed what appeared to him to be a trash bag in the roadway. The operator drove over the object and stated it felt like the vehicle had struck snow or ice. The operator pulled onto Sea St. where he noticed the vehicle was now driving awkwardly, and pulled into a side street to investigate. At that time the operator discovered he had struck Galati who was now under the vehicle. The operator backed the vehicle off of Galati and subsequently notified emergency responders sometime after his discovery.
Galati was transported to CCH with severe trauma and was taken to Tufts University Medical Center in Boston via Med-Flight helicopter. He has since been transferred to a third medical facility where he is listed as being in critical but stable condition. Galati is expected to recover from his injuries.
The Barnstable Police Accident Reconstruction Team was called to the scene and the incident is currently under investigation. No charges have been filed against the operator at this time.
UPDATE – 3/17/2018: Sources report the male victim was just 26-years-old… and the Cape Cod Times learned he was eventually airlifted from CCH to Tufts Medical in Boston. Also, HN observed the patient’s injuries were particularly traumatic, as one would expect to see on a person who may have been dragged for a significant amount of time and distance (over 3 blocks, from Seabrook Rd. to Summerside Ln.)…
HN also noted that for 3:40AM, there was a notable group (I observed at least 4 to 5 young individuals approximately in their 20s) who showed up at the scene. Police transported at least one female and others back to BPD Headquarters, possible witnesses…
Right from the start, the scene presented a very grave atmosphere where one could tell officers had their work cut out for them as they tried to piece together what exactly happened
As of 5:30PM, the BPD is still not ready to release many official details… but they are certainly working on it… and will be working on this very tragic and gruesome scene in the hours and days to come.

Initial HN coverage:
HYANNIS – As you will see in the following HN Video, at about 3:41AM this morning, police and rescue rushed to the area of Sea Street and Summerside Lane after a driver reported striking and dragging a man who may have been already down in the roadway.
The patient, described as a male, [age 27], was rushed to CCH where a Medflight helicopter team was also responding at the time of this report… judging from the scene, his condition was certainly critical and life-threatening…
Barnstable Police accident reconstruction experts were working the scene for at least two or more hours this morning… [and they will likely need to return to the scene during the daylight hours.]
The following HN Video contains radio transmissions from the actual call… HN arrived moments after first responders and started documenting the tragic scene. [DEVELOPING]
