EXPLOSIVE & FIERY CRASH: Hyannis neighborhoods without power after vehicle slices through pole… female driver later captured after fleeing scene… [HN VIDEO]
HYANNIS – [DEVELOPING] – As you will see in the following HN Video, police are investigating an explosive and fiery single car crash where the female driver reportedly hopped out and fled the scene.
At about 10:45 p.m. last evening, police and firefighters responded to the intersection of Sea Street and Ocean Ave where they found wires down in the roadway and an electrical pole engulfed in flames.
Explosions brought some nearby residents out of their homes to see what was going on.
Police officers checked nearby Keyes Beach looking for the driver. A K-9 unit arrived and began searching… and the driver managed to evade capture for a period of time until police began receiving calls about a female in the backyards of nearby homes. One caller stated they could hear her coughing. Another caller thought they heard screaming…
Officers reportedly caught up to the female and placed her under arrest for Operating Under the Influence. One patrolman radioed that she was “a mess” and it turned out the woman was not transported to the hospital, but straight to jail instead.
At about 6:00 a.m., crews were still on scene fixing the utility pole and securing power for local residents.
The Barnstable Police are investigating the crash and the driver is likely looking at additional criminal charges…
HN will provide official updates as they become available.
