HN PHOTOS: Hyannis lads now high school grads… (and other news from the overnight…)

[HN NOTES] Met these three very congenial Hyannis lads kicking a ball around the parking lot at the youth center around 11pm last evening. They were just babies not too long ago, born right after 9-11 in 2002 – “new world” babies.
Now recently graduated from Barnstable High School, these young men graciously spent a few minutes discussing sports and whatnot with me – God bless ’em… the old Kennedy Hockey rink they never even saw… decisions like college vs. going to work right away… whether they felt the need to party the next four years away at some college, or not… they said they weren’t the partying type, which told me they were probably a lot more squared away than I was at their age.
No booze. No drugs. No disrespectful “gangsta” bullshit… just a couple of young Hyannis lads kicking a soccer ball around. Thinking about life.
Sort of made me feel good inside as I walked back to the car, knowing there are still “kids” who enjoy the simple, innocent things. I wanted the feeling to last forever but the radios were waiting, barking out the awful realities I’ve become way too familiar with over the years… the constant reminders of the evil that “men” do… the human frailties and disasters I was bound to run into again, sooner or later…
I aimed the HN news car north toward the car fire that just came over the radio, right as a memory of my beautiful high school girlfriend picking me up after hockey practice popped into my brain… we were outside the old Kennedy Memorial Skating Rink, in the back parking lot near the locker rooms – which were basically where the lads were now having their innocent “kick-about” – over 40 years ago. She often brought cold soft drinks from a local convenience store. She liked Pepsi, I preferred Coke. (Or was it the other way around? It was so very long, long ago…) We’d then drive north along Bearses Way back toward her house in Yarmouth Port. The same direction I was traveling now… 40 years later… now much older… but still young at heart…
She drove a stick shift and wore “soft fuzzy sweaters too magical to touch,” as the song goes…
Thanks lads! And best of luck in this new world!
