HN WEEKEND PHOTOS: “24 HR. DRIVE-UP…”

HYANNIS – [HN NOTES & MULLINGS ON THE MATTER] – There were a lot of motor vehicle collisions over this past weekend. Here you see one that happened on Route 28 at the rear entrance to the Cape Cod Mall. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured.
In one of the HN photos you see one of the passengers being assisted by a Hyannis Firefighter and a member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit in moving his vehicle out of the roadway after it had been officially documented with photos.
Some of the many car accidents this past weekend were more serious than others. Some involved serious, life-threatening injuries. Almost all of them could have been prevented…
The typical causes of car crashes this time of year are reckless, irrational speed and distracted driving. Drinking and drugging cause operators to be distracted and not in control of their vehicles. Texting is very frequently a factor in being distracted and not in control.
One can protect themselves from intoxicated or otherwise distracted idiots by becoming extra alert and defensive while operating in traffic… or anywhere you find yourself in a moving vehicle.
Excessive speed is not only a stupid way to shave off what only amounts to a couple of minutes (if that, maybe) off your arrival. Excessive, reckless speed is almost always a factor in all serious accidents.
Reckless speed, distracted driving, and impaired driving turn otherwise good people into selfish criminals and reckless murderers.
Yes, there are such things as “purely accidental…” but not so much when you’re texting because you cannot wait a few minutes until you stop or otherwise arrive… and definitely not so much if you are intoxicated. (Also, red lights at traffic signals are not a considerate place to catch up on emails and texts… you are not paying attention and often holding up traffic. Also, texting while stopped at red lights and stop signs has been known to put pedestrians at risk… because illegal texters often put the car in motion before looking up… I have seen this often… and each time I say to myself, “look at that selfish, self-important idiot…”)
A criminal is a criminal… and in my opinion, they are usually very careless, selfish, and idiotic. I recommend taking measures to avoid coming in contact them “like the plague.”
* The outcome of the Barnstable Police Investigation and possible actions taken in relation to the aforementioned HN Photos was uncertain at the time of this post…
