The Nighttime Cometh… [HN photos]
“There is no present or future-only the past, happening over and over again-now.”
~ Eugene O’Neill
HN NOTES – 4/6/2021:
I tend to wince a little every time someone says, “it must have been quiet last night because I saw you didn’t post anything.” I wince because it’s never really quiet in Hyannis. If it ever seems “quiet,” it’s typically an optical illusion.
A deceptive and sometimes dangerous optical illusion…
Because one who truly knows Hyannis, knows better than to ever be fooled by its ebbs and flows, its wiles and ways – its good, the bad and the ugly – and there’s plenty of good, bad, and ugly out there… mostly “good,” I’d like to believe. But don’t close your eyes. Don’t let your guard down. Don’t be fooled by the optical illusions. Danger is often just a heartbeat away. Remember that and you should be fine. But also remember that nothing is ever for certain, especially when you’re driving after dark on the Cape, for example. If other cars are out, you’re rolling the dice.
Drug use ups-the-ante exponentially. Whether it be copious amounts of booze, or life-snatching Fentanyl, the stakes are high and death can be that unpredictable heartbeat away.
Nobody ever plans on dying or being badly maimed when out for an evening of fun and relaxation. It’s supposed to be the “Cape Cod Dream!” The promise of Cape Cod fun, including “sand dunes and salty air,” “dancing through the streets of Hyannis,” “making love at midnight in the dunes of the Cape…” all that! It’s good stuff! And I highly recommend it.
Bottom line, Hyannis is a fantastic place to live and have fun, IF you’re smart about it.
But back to the initial assumption, or question, depending how it’s phrased, “it must have been quiet last night,” or “was it quiet last night?” The answer is “no.” It’s never really quiet in Hyannis. Ever.
In general, HN only publishes a very small percentage of what is photographed or video recorded. No doubt there’s a lot of very weird and wild stuff that happens here constantly. The problem is that some footage is either too graphic, personal, or redundant. Also, the scenes I document throughout the overnights often start off loud and volatile, but end up being rather innocuous and not necessarily news when it’s all said and done.
All HN footage and stills end up being archived by the terabyte. Saved and maintained for a wide range of purposes. The files are extraordinary and definitely very interesting in and of themselves, albeit not always appropriate for “prime time” publication.
On the other hand, many of HN’s readers are eager onlookers, curious about this, that, and the other thing. So, I will do my best to realize that what may be “redundant” for me is not necessarily redundant for those who are not timeworn creatures of the night.
So, on those seemingly “quiet” overnights, HN will try to publish random images for its curious viewers. To illustrate that it’s never really dull out here. But please bear in mind that the following photographs are not meant to be indictments. They are simply activity captures at random recent scenes, not meant to be judged one way or the other. For that reason they may be intentionally blurred or obscured… because they are simply examples of interesting moments, archived for historical purposes. They may depict close calls or dramatic moments that ended without an arrest or anyone being seriously hurt. Just random images…
It’s never really quiet during the wee hours. There’s always “serious stuff” going on…
