*** WATCH *** LATEST UPDATE ON THE ONGOING STATUS OF HYANNISNEWS.COM…
INITIAL HN POST – On Monday morning, April 18th , 2020, HN posted the following message to readers:
*** PLEASE STAND BY *** HN will be taking a couple days off to make a decision on the future of HyannisNews.com…
By Robert Bastille
(By the way, these will be the first days off I’ve had in years! 🙂 )
HN has run into a few issues that need to be fixed in order to continue providing local news coverage. As it is now, HN is free to everyone and I would love for it to continue that way as I know not everyone is able to pay a subscription fee. Since 2013 HN has been able to survive (but just barely) on several advertisements and media sales to TV and print news broadcasts. But working HN is a 24/7/365 affair that quite often goes without pay… and I’m basically at a time in life where I need to be fair to myself.
And speaking of fairness. Doing spot news gathering has its challenges. And if I had to stop doing what I love, I would very much miss the amazing first responders and professionals I’ve been privileged to be around for over a decade. Certain police officers and firefighters have been very kind and helpful and I could not have done HN without them. But having said that, there are still a few extremely selfish government officials who passively continue to interfere with my work. And it’s annoying. And I do not deserve that ongoing type of harassment. (It’s also illegal, but that’s besides the point…)
I would definitely miss being a local photojournalist here in Hyannis… but I would not miss the harassment that occasionally rears its ugly head at the wrong moments. I’m getting too old for that nonsense. It’s been known to happen sometimes right when everyone is seemingly “getting along…” then WHAM, someone unnecessarily interferes with my work, ruining my chances to do it right (and maybe get paid). It’s nowhere near as bad as it was when I first started, but it still happens (albeit passively now) and it’s extremely annoying and counterproductive.
And also, I would like to point out it’s a lot easier to put up with the BS when one is being paid for their efforts… so there’s that issue… and I need time to give things thought.
Sorry about any inconveniences this may cause. I’m truly grateful for all the support I’ve received from my amazing readers and supporters up to this point. My supporters have literally kept me going during some exceptionally tough times. But it’s important to be honest and I will give you all my decision this week.
Warmest Regards,
Rob Bastille, HN
