*** WATCH *** MAN DOWN! (Please consider keeping Narcan on hand in your vehicle…)
HYANNIS – [HN NOTES] – Last night wasn’t the first time I’ve come across an apparent overdose patient, but it was the first time I had my “overdose kit” prepped, handy and ready to go. These things happen suddenly. And seconds matter.
I was turning into the Staples parking lot on Barnstable Road when I noticed a couple standing over a body. A man was down on his back in the middle of the parking lot. He was unresponsive, not moving and did not appear to be breathing. The couple said they had already called EMS. I grabbed my “overdose kit” which is always stored in the front driver’s side door of my vehicle. The simple kit has rubber gloves and two Narcan doses ready to go. What followed wasn’t difficult, especially since I had everything ready… press play to see what happened next… (But again, the point is that once you have made a very basic “overdose” kit, the rest is not hard at all – I promise – if I can do it, anyone can! And it certainly beats feeling helpless… remember, lately overdoses can happen anywhere at anytime… and it isn’t always the known user that comes into contact with a dangerous drug like Fentanyl… contact/exposure can be accidental)
