*** WATCH *** MAN SUFFERING VOLATILE MENTAL HEALTH EMERGENCY WOULD NOT DROP LARGE KNIFE…
HYANNIS – At around 11pm Friday evening, Barnstable Police Officers responded to a report of man suffering a mental health emergency in the area of Barnstable High School on West Main Street.
The first officer to spot the man noticed he was carrying a large fixed-blade knife. Another officer then reported the man’s behavior as being volatile and that he was not going to drop the knife.
According to sources on scene, officers encountered the man, and stuck with him while pleading for him to drop the knife. Sources tell HN that officers had walked with the man for about a block in front of the high school…
In the following HN Video you can hear a police sergeant reminding officers of their less lethal options.
When the man suddenly began to run with the knife, officers decided to fire two beanbag rounds which struck the man, causing him to drop the knife. Officers then moved in and secured the man in handcuffs for his safety, as well as the safety of others.
Hyannis FD Rescue responded and transported the man to Cape Cod Hospital.
The following HN Video contains dramatic police emergency radio transmissions. It also contains numerous still photographs. The audio highlights an extremely stressful situation which placed officers in a situation where they needed to quickly decide on the proper amount of force.
