*** WATCH *** Officers smash window to save man sound asleep with truck in drive…
HYANNIS – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, early yesterday morning – Sunday, November 14, 2021 – Barnstable Police squad cars had to scramble toward the busy intersection of Route 28 and Yarmouth Road for a report of an unresponsive man behind the wheel, with his foot on the brake and the truck still in drive. One patrol officer quickly had the presence of mind to block in the full sized pickup truck using the rear bumper of his cruiser. The male driver had the music blaring and would not wake up despite the officers’ knocking and yelling. And as you will see, one patrolman took his collapsible metal baton, reared back and smashed out a door window right behind the driver’s seat. (Which is not as easy as he made it look…) Despite some tense moments, officers were able to finally open the driver side door and gain access to driver. When officers hear these type of calls, they automatically consider the possibility of an alcohol or drug overdose. But in this case, remarkably, it turns out the driver had dozed off while waiting for the light to change. He was overtired and on his way home, and is apparently a very sound sleeper. Officers were confident it was not drugs and instead a matter of dozing off. The driver felt embarrassed by the incident but in retrospect seemed to realize how fortunate he was that officers were able to act quickly, waking him before something much worse could have happened…
