*** WATCH *** SPRAWLING “FALSE REPORT” CAPER: Alleged “robbery suspect” turned out be stabbing victim, allegedly attacked by male who initially called police… K9 locates partially buried knife, gets bacon, egg & cheese sandwich as reward…
HYANNIS – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, early this morning, Barnstable Police squad cars rushed toward Pitchers Way for an adult male reporting that he had just been hit on the head with a pipe and robbed of his backpack. He had a head laceration, but the rest of his story turned out to be false, according to police officers on scene.
Responding officers were initially led to believe that the alleged robbery suspect had just fled the scene with a dangerous weapon. Barnstable Police Patrolman Nolan O’Melia and his K9 partner Alex hit the ground tracking and successfully followed a scent trail to a residence about a block or so from where the male who initially called police was being treated by Hyannis Rescue. At the residence, Officer O’Melia could hear a disturbance inside and immediately requested backup. Officers then encountered a male initially believed to be the suspect bleeding profusely from a stab wound to his arm. Officers switched gears and began looking into the matter further. An ambulance was called for the stabbing victim while the first ambulance transported the initial caller to Cape Cod Hospital for a laceration to the head.
As the investigation unfolded over a period of several hours, along a sprawling crime scene stretching at least two blocks on Pitchers Way, officers located bits of evidence but were having trouble finding the knife. Patrolman O’Melia and K9 Alex were deployed a second time, eventually locating a partially buried knife several hours into the investigation. The knife is believed to have been used in the stabbing.
Police believe that the first male who initially called police reporting that he had been assaulted and robbed – a 48-year-old male out of Dorchester, Massachusetts, with over 120 entries on his adult record – was not being entirely honest about what actually happened. Police believe there was an altercation in the street where the male from Dorchester ended up stabbing the other male in the arm. The man who was stabbed reportedly grabbed a pipe-shaped lawn marker and began swinging it, trying to defend himself, eventually striking the Dorchester male in the forehead.
The male who initially called police saying he was hit in the head and robbed is under arrest and will be charged for stabbing the other male. Both adult males were transported to Cape Cod Hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. [DEVELOPING]
