Initial HN Report:
HYANNIS – [DEVELOPING] – A family dog is still at large after fleeing a traffic stop where the owner was taken into custody on drunk driving charges, according to sources at the time of this report.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, shortly before 11:00 p.m. last evening, a Barnstable Police Patrolman pulled over a car in front of Ideal Floor Covering on Iyannough Rd. The car had two dogs and an alleged erratic driver.
Officers had just received a call about a car operating erratically in the area. A description was given out and a traffic stop occurred shortly thereafter.
The two dogs appeared visibly upset as they watched their owner being arrested on suspicion of Operating Under the Influence. The driver was transported back to BPD Headquarters for booking.
HN had already left the area when officers began focusing on securing the dogs who were left behind while the owner was being transported to jail. According to reports, the larger of the two dogs suddenly acted up and escaped by running across Iyannough Road toward Kappy’s Liquors.
Officers immediately began searching the local neighborhoods for the fleeing canine.
According to reports, the lost pet was last seen running down Spring Street. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of this family pet is urged to contact the Barnstable Police Department at 508-775-0387.
It’s uncertain how the larger dog managed to escape… [DEVELOPING – Please check back for official details.]
However, the smaller of the two dogs was unable to escape and was subsequently transported back to BPD Headquarters inside the towed vehicle, according to sources…. [Again, details are developing, please check back for official updates.]
The smaller dog was reportedly later picked up at BPD Headquarters by a female family member.
At the time of this report, officers and family are still searching for the lost dog.
