“it was pouring rain…” [HN Photos]

“I don’t know how I got here, but I’m mighty glad I came.

HN Photo Notes: Around 1:45 a.m. this morning, just as HN was resigning himself to an overnight shift that felt like a total wash (pun very much intended), the Hyannis Fire Department’s tones pierced the night, signaling a potential active fire at an address in the West Main Street area. The homeowner had reported a suspicious odor of burning plastic wafting from the basement. Outside, it was absolutely pouring—the kind of relentless downpour that no sane soul would brave during the wee hours without good reason.
And it restored HN’s faith in humanity to arrive swiftly on scene and find our dedicated Hyannis firefighters already out in the deluge, diligently working the situation. They swiftly investigated the source of the pungent plastic smell, ruling out any active fire. HN captured the above photos just as the crew was packing up and preparing to clear the scene. Whatever the issue turned out to be—a real “nothingburger,” after all—it was handled with efficiency, and the property was promptly returned to the homeowner. Case closed.
Under normal circumstances, HN might have pestered the firefighters for additional details, but given the miserable rain and the ungodly hour, it seemed only fair to let our tireless first responders retreat to their station for a well-deserved thorough investigation of the inside of their eyelids.
