TO CATCH A THIEF: Cops say alert citizen busted out cell phone and started rolling on video as two guys were attempting to break into his vehicle…
The following is the actual press statement from the Yarmouth Police Department:
ALERT CITIZEN FILMS FELONY IN PROGRESS AND WANTED MAN IS CAPTURED BY YPD
On March 22, 2018, at 10:40PM, an alert citizen called the Yarmouth Police Department Emergency 911 Dispatch Center regarding two white males attempting to break into his vehicle on Evergreen Street in South Yarmouth and the citizen was currently following both of them.
Yarmouth Police Department Patrol Officers Bryan Mey, Mary Gibney, Paul Mellet, and Marc Thibeault were dispatched to the scene and upon arrival they observed two white males walking down Spruce Street.
Both males were encountered and identified as Richard Mayo and Cameron Fitzpatrick. Both do not live in the area and stated they were out for a late night walk.
The citizen who observed the attempted break-in met with the Patrol Officers and was able to show the Officers a video on his IPhone, of Mayo attempting to break in to his truck
A check of Mayo revealed two Active Arrest Warrants for Breaking and Entering and Stealing.
Mayo–who has 72 prior charges in Massachusetts–was placed under arrest by Patrol Officer Mey.
While attempting to place Mayo in to the police cruiser, Mayo became combative and made several threats to Officer Mey.
The threats against Officer Mey were documented and Mayo was transported to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters–held overnight—and transported to the Barnstable Police Department this morning for arraignment on the new charge and processing on his warrants.
The investigation into Fitzpatrick’s involvement is ongoing.
The Yarmouth Police Department commends the alert citizen for his action in help to report and stop a felony in progress and the Patrol Officers involved for their prompt and thorough on- scene investigation that resulted in the arrest of a wanted man and the prevention of additional crimes.
