*** WATCH *** SANDWICH POLICE INVESTIGATING POSSIBLE SHOT FIRED… MALE IN CUSTODY ON DRUG POSSESSION CHARGE… [DEVELOPING]
SANDWICH — [HN NOTES] – “Just Say No” was an anti-drug abuse advertising campaign created by First Lady Nancy Reagan during the 1980s. Its aim was to discourage children from engaging in illicit drug use by teaching them various ways to say “no.”
According to Wikipedia, “The campaign drew significant criticism. Critics labelled Nancy Reagan’s approach to promoting drug awareness reductive, arguing that tackling the issue of drug abuse required a more complex approach than simply encouraging the use of [a] catchphrase. In fact, two studies suggested that enrollees in DARE-like programs were actually more likely to use alcohol and cigarettes…”
Nearly four decades later, the so-called Fentanyl Epidemic is now being referred to as a national “crisis.” Drug overdoses here on the Cape do not appear to be slowing… at times it seems to be getting much worse. In fact, Massachusetts Department of Public Health statistics show a steady increase in the number of statewide yearly overdose deaths between the years 2000 and 2021 (see following graph). Note, the current data does not yet show the number of deaths in 2022 and 2023. Also, current local statistics were unavailable at the time of this report. In HN’s opinion, it’s important to talk about and share these numbers…

“Just Say No?” If only things were that simple…
