*** NEW DETAILS *** 53-YEAR-OLD HYANNIS MAN DIES FOLLOWING AFTERNOON CRASH [HN VIDEO]
BPD MEDIA UPDATE 1/29/24:
At approximately 1:44 p.m. on Monday 1/29/24, officers from the Barnstable Police Department were called to 852 Bearses Way in Hyannis regarding a motor vehicle accident with personal injury.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed several vehicles off the roadway, including one vehicle that had run over a fire hydrant and hit a tree near the side of the road.
Hyannis Fire Department Rescue personnel arrived on scene almost simultaneously with the responding police officers and began treating two operators in vehicles directly involved in the initial accident.
A third vehicle ran over debris that had scattered upon impact from the crash; however, that operator was not injured.
The two initial involved operators were transported to Cape Cod Hospital by Hyannis Fire Department ambulances. Soon after arriving at the hospital, one operator, a 53-year-old male resident of Hyannis, succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead. The second operator, a 58-year-old male resident of Plymouth, was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Barnstable Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the fatal motor vehicle accident.

*** WATCH *** SPRAWLING CRASH SCENE… AT LEAST ONE PATIENT IN CRITICAL CONDITION…
HYANNIS, Massachusetts – Police and firefighters rushed toward a devasting crash scene on Bearses Way shortly before 2:00 p.m. today. The sprawling crash scene stretched along Bearses Way between the intersection with Pitchers Way and the entrance to the Tractor Supply Company. At least two vehicles had heavy to moderate damage. Another vehicle appears to have struck a tire that broke off from one of the vehicles. As you will see in the following HN Video, a heavily damaged Toyota sedan appears to have knocked over a fire hydrant before striking a tree. One of the drivers suffered serious trauma and his injuries were described as critical.
The Barnstable Police Department had crash reconstruction experts on scene. Bearses Way was completely shut down while officials worked the scene. The road reopened about 3:30 p.m. It was windy and snowing at the time of the crash… The Barnstable Police Department is investigating the cause of the crash… [DEVELOPING]
