INITIAL HN REPORT:
YARMOUTH – A male pedestrian is fighting for his life after being struck by a truck last evening. He was crossing Station Ave in the area of Advance Auto Parts.
Around 10:00 p.m., police and firefighters rushed toward the scene after receiving a couple of 911 calls. Upon arrival they found a man down in the roadway in very serious condition. The roadway was immediately closed down to all traffic as officers on scene requested a Sheriff’s photographer and an accident reconstruction team.
According to radio transmissions, Yarmouth Rescue inquired about the possibility of Medflight but decided to head straight to Cape Cod Hospital after it was unclear how fast a helicopter could arrived due to the poor weather conditions in the area.
Upon arrival, HN was approached by a woman who was upset and very concerned whether the patient would survive or not. The woman told HN she had just met the man and given him twenty dollars to buy food. The woman did not witness the actual crash, but she believed the man was on his way to buy some food nearby. She told HN that he appeared grateful for having been given some money…
The male driver of the pickup truck which struck the man remained on scene and was apparently being very cooperative with police.
As of 12:30 a.m., accident reconstruction experts were still working the scene. They had toned down their headlights and emergency lights, and the stretch of road where the accident had occurred was very dark, and without street lights.
The pickup truck was towed back to the Yarmouth Police Department…
