Feb. 25 Court Report UPDATE: MACEDO, LUIS CARLOS, 47, 12 Ashumet Road, Mashpee; photographing an unsuspecting partially nude or nude person (two counts). Ordered to stay away from victim, surrender passport; pretrial hearing March 20.

Editor’s Note: Due to a possible personal connection to this incident, where I know one of the possible victims, I am publishing the Barnstable Police Press release in its entirety instead of personally writing about this investigation first hand.

Barnstable Police Press Release:

On Saturday afternoon Feb. 23, 2013 a 29 year old female came into the lobby of the Barnstable Police Department. She reported to Officer Jennifer Ellis that the previous night she was in, Sunsational Tanning, a Hyannis tanning salon. She explained to Officer Ellis that while tanning in the booth she believes she was videotaped and/or photographed. She said the employee, a male in his late forties, directed her to the booth. She explained further that in looking at the floor while she was tanning she suspected a camera lens was beneath her feet area. She abruptly ended her tanning session and left.

She return the next day to the same booth and saw the lens not there and was now convinced it to be a camera. She then went to the Barnstable Police Department and explained the same employee is working at this time.

Officer Roy Ricci, in plain clothes, set up surveillance in front of the tanning salon to observe customers. The front of the tanning salon is all windows allowing a clear view of the inside. A short time later Officer Ricci noticed the suspected employee walk down the hall and go to the entrance of a room with a tanning bed. He saw him pull out his cell phone and put it up to the changing room area. Officer Ricci entered the salon and identified himself and retrieved the phone from the employee, later identified as Luis Carlos Macedo. Officer Ricci noticed a small blacked out window with a peep hole concealed by an advertisement allowing a clear view into the changing area.

Mr. Macedo admitted to secretly videoing girls using his cell phone via either videoing through the peep hole or sliding his camera under the perforated floor of the booths.

Detective John York conducted a forensic examination of Luis Macedo’s phone and recovered approximately twenty-one videos.

Luis Macedo 47 years old from Mashpee was arrested and charged with two counts of secretly video recording or photographing of nude or partial nudity.
