YPD media release:
At approximately 12:25PM on Thursday, August 6th, 2015 Proactive Anti-Crime Unit Officers Christopher Van Ness and Nicholas Ambrosini were assigned to assist Patrol Officers Michael Kramer and Nicholas Giammarco as they checked the Route 28 corridor of West Yarmouth for a woman wanted by the Abington Police Department regarding a reported parental kidnapping home invasion which occurred in their town earlier this morning.
It was reported that the suspects had used pepper spray on the baby sitter and forced entry to the residence before taking the three young children. Abington Police further advised that the suspect’s cell phone was tracked to a motel in West Yarmouth.
Yarmouth Police Officers immediately visited the motel and checked the motel grounds and motel register with negative results. It was subsequently learned that the phone was possibly 800 meters from the motel. Yarmouth Police Department Patrol Officers and PAC Officers initiated a saturation patrol of the surrounding area as well as checked the registers of the motels in the area.
At approximately 1:43PM, PAC Unit Officer Van Ness observed a blue Nissan Quest van with a woman operator traveling westbound on Route 28 near Higgins Crowell Road. The vehicle matched the description of the suspect vehicle. Officer Van Ness turned around but was unable to locate the vehicle in the heavy Route 28 summertime traffic. Surrounding Law Enforcement agencies were notified that the vehicle was seen in the Yarmouth area and an extensive search was activated.
At approximately 3:24PM, the Yarmouth Police Department Dispatch Center received a call from the Econolodge Motel reporting that a blue 2007 Nissan Quest van was parked in their rear lot. Officers responded in unmarked cars and verified that this was the suspect vehicle that had been spotted earlier. Econolodge management further reported that the suspect—Bruna P. Gomes—had rented room #144 of their establishment. A team of Yarmouth Police Officers converged on the room and found the suspect inside with the three unharmed children. The suspect was placed into custody without incident. The children were all transported back to Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters in an unmarked police cruiser.
The Massachusetts Department of Children and Families has been notified—is currently with the children at Yarmouth Police Headquarters—and will decide on eventual custody and control. The suspect has invoked her Miranda Rights through her attorney and was held at Yarmouth Police Headquarters. Members of the Abington Police Department arrived at Yarmouth Police Department Headquarters and will transport the suspect back to Abington.
The Yarmouth Police Department commends all of the Police Officers, Dispatchers, and Police Matrons involved in the investigation as well as the media—the Massachusetts State Police Amber Alert Program—and the management and employees of the Econolodge.
