An Evening of Wild Crashes and Manhunts Across Barnstable [HN Photos]

Last evening brought crashes, foot pursuits, and multi-agency responses that stretched police resources from Hyannis/Barnstable-area woods to Route 6, West Barnstable, and Marstons Mills conservation land. Initial details from police radio transmissions and sources paint a chaotic night of single vehicle crashes, live wires, K9 tracks, a drone search, and two arrests.

Phinney’s Lane near Hathaways Pond, Barnstable
Shortly before midnight, Barnstable Police were dispatched to Phinney’s Lane just north of the Hathaways Pond entrance after a single vehicle struck a utility pole carrying high-tension wires. Live wires lay draped across the roadway, complicating the approach for responders as they worked to reach the wrecked vehicle.
Officers were advised en route that the suspected driver had fled the scene—and was not wearing shoes. Further investigation showed he had run to a nearby residence on Phinney’s Lane. While officers headed there, the driver’s mother called to report that her son was now home. When police converged on the residence, the barefoot man bolted from a building into the woods.
A Yarmouth Police K9 unit arrived and began tracking the suspect toward the highway. Barnstable Police also launched a drone, which located him in a wooded area near the highway. The man jumped a fence and made his way onto Route 6. With the drone unit, converging local officers, and Massachusetts State Police assisting, he was eventually taken into custody on the highway.
Radio transmissions described the 22-year-old as intoxicated and distraught. Hyannis News was at Barnstable Police headquarters seeking additional details when the call came for another serious crash in West Barnstable.

A West Barnstable Fire Department ambulance crew attended to the adult male driver, who was conscious, alert, and seated on the ground across the street from the wreck. He was transported to Cape Cod Hospital for evaluation of injuries not believed to be life-threatening. A Barnstable Police officer followed the ambulance as the crash investigation continued.
A member of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit responded to document the scene, including a snapped utility pole support. The investigation remained active and ongoing at the time of this report.

Barnstable Police patrol officers responded to a residence on Race Lane in Marstons Mills for a reported altercation between a male and a female. The male had already fled on foot before officers arrived. An ambulance was requested for the female.
With probable cause for the man’s arrest, officers established a perimeter. A Yarmouth Police K9 unit arrived, hit the ground tracking, and followed the trail into a nearby conservation area. There, officers eventually encountered the suspect and placed him under arrest.
