*** WATCH *** Extremely dangerous situation ends safely and compassionately…
[HN NOTES] – A firearm was said to have been discharged as a middle aged man was suffering a mental emergency, which included hallucinations that his home was actively under attack. And it would be level-headed Barnstable Police personnel that would safely defuse the situation and get the man help.
As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, early this morning, several Barnstable Patrol Officers rushed to an address within their town after a woman called saying her husband was suffering a sudden mental health emergency and delusions. She also informed dispatchers that he was holding a loaded firearm.
While en route, it was relayed to responding police officers that a shot may have been fired. This development caused a responding police sergeant to notify the SWAT team.
The shot may have somehow snapped the man out of his dangerous hallucinations because dispatchers were now saying that he was calm and cooperative. And according to radio transmissions, the wife was said to now have the weapon’s magazine. But responding officers still were not taking any chances.
Several patrol officers met their sergeant about a block away from the residence where they put on extra ballistic protection and armed themselves with patrol rifles. Together they carefully approached and surrounded the residence, eventually having the male exit unarmed, with his hands in the air. Because of excellent communication between the responding officers and the dispatchers on the phone with the husband and wife, the situation ended safely without needing to get the SWAT team involved.
The scene was made safe and the man was transported to Cape Cod Hospital. All weapons at the scene were secured.
The Barnstable Police Department is investigating the incident…
