*** WATCH *** Massive search as young man with disabilities showed up at Hyannis hotel, 5 miles away…
BARNSTABLE – As you will see in the following HN Video, police from across the region were out searching for a young man who went missing in the area of Railroad Ave in the center of Barnstable Village last evening. The disabled young man was described as being in his early twenties. The cold dark evening, coupled with his limiting physical and mental condition placed him very much in danger. Barnstable Police began focusing their initial search on the surrounding railroad tracks and Barnstable County Court Complex. Additional K9 units from the Yarmouth Police Department and Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist. The Massachusetts State Police sent troopers and a helicopter.
It was all hands on deck.
Search efforts had been ongoing and increasing with little results when Barnstable Police patrol officers were dispatched to the Comfort Inn on Main Street in downtown Hyannis, sometime prior to midnight. BPD dispatch received a call that a young man had just walked in off the street, appearing disoriented. Although the missing man very well could present as being disoriented, some officers on the ground were less than optimistic because the Comfort Inn was a good 5 miles away from where they were currently searching. It was a significant distance with a lot of hazards in between, including an airport and busy, poorly lit roadways.
The first Barnstable Police Officers to arrive at the Comfort Inn quickly determined they had located the missing young man. Hyannis Rescue was called and a staff member from a Barnstable Village residential program was transported to the hotel in order to retrieve the young man.
The missing person was now safe and the search was terminated, with worried officers on the ground expressing relief. A Barnstable Police Lieutenant radioed the state police helicopter crew, thanking them for their response.
The Comfort Inn staff member who alerted police was instrumental in helping to end a dangerous situation.
