BPD: Man charged after taking memorial flags from West Barnstable overpass and burying them in nearby woods…
WEST BARNSTABLE – At about 6:43PM last evening, Barnstable Patrolman Sean Roycroft responded to the area of the Route 6 overpass on Route 149 after receiving reports of man removing flags from the bridge memorial.
Barnstable Police Detective Peter Ginnetty had reportedly observed the suspect removing flags from the highway overpass…
David Hickman, age 60, of Plymouth, was taken into custody and charged with Injury to Personal Property, Injury to a Memorial, and three counts of larceny.
Hickman also allegedly dismantled a specially designed police support flag…
The flags represented support for police and Hickman reportedly said the police support flags were not appropriate. He even reportedly told police he had called the Massachusetts Department of Transportation saying the flags shouldn’t be there… and that he was helping to clear the flags.
Police also say that Hickman took the flags and buried them in a nearby wooded area just prior to being arrested.
The investigation is ongoing and police are looking into whether Hickman may be responsible for other similar cases of vandalism in the area.
Hickman is scheduled to be arraigned later this morning in Barnstable District Court.
