Cape Cod Weather
by Kristy Spinelli
The weather has EVERYTHING to do with plans people make on Cape Cod. Whether we live here year-round, come on the weekends, or vacation here, we watch the forecast and obsess about all of the things we try and cram into the short 48-hours we have for our weekend. Whether we are headed out to Sandy Neck or Crow’s Pasture for some ORV time or simply driving to one of the closest beaches to catch some rays and read a book, Summer is almost here and we all have the “ideal” Cape Cod day!
On Monday we get up to watch the forecast and look wide-eyed at those last 2 days of the week posted by the ever-correct meteorologists we have here in New England. Sunny and 80 degrees from Friday to Monday…yay!! This is what we live for!!! We make plans with our friends, shop for food for the grill, make sure we have enough firewood for the fire pit and make the most important stop of all, the liquor store to ensure our weekend is perfect!!! By Wednesday, the forecast, still looking awesome, the workdays crawl by as we anticipate all the fun to be had. Friday. We wake up to marinate the steak-tips for Saturday’s outing and WHAT??…the weekend’s forecast has changed from the bright sun and 80 degree days to torrential rain and 57 for the high. The weekend is a wash and we frantically change the channel to see if there was some big mistake and whether Todd from Channel 7 was just playing some big weather “joke” on us. NOPE. How did this all happen?? How does a person who has studied weather and forecasting for years get this all so terribly wrong?? Overnight???
We settle into our depression again…that familiar feeling that somehow lasts from those last few sun-filled days in October to the end of May and we get angry at the world. Robbed. Our weekend plans pulled like a rug beneath our anticipated sandy feet. Texts are sent to cancel the once 8 am meet-up in the parking lot to drive out on the beach, tips are cooked and fed to the dog, cue movies from Netflix and the drinking begins. Not like the fun, sun-filled, Red Solo Cup day drinking we looked forward to but the under-cover sipping from our old college mug, something dark that burns our throat like we were hoping the sun was going to on our winter-white skin.
If I had it all to do over again, I might take a chance to become a Meteorologist…I mean how many jobs let you be wrong 95% of the time and impact SO many lives each day! And they get paid to be wrong!!!??? I am going to try that in my job…tomorrow I will “guess” the way I should teach my kids to write their uppercase and lowercase letters…I mean, does it matter anyway??
This coming long weekend we are planning to celebrate the beginning of Summer. The forecast looks to provide that gorgeous sunshine and perfect 80 degree days we’ve been dreaming of for months. This year instead of planning the entire week for those quick 72-hours of possible sunshine and beach time, I will buy already marinated steak tips on Saturday morning and stand in line with 100 people at the “packie” just to avoid the sadness of ruined plans…after all, we live on Cape Cod.
“If you don’t like the weather in New England now, just wait a few minutes.”― Mark Twain
