Yarmouth Police Seek Driver and Vehicle that Struck Pedestrian and Fled
On Monday August 22, 2016, at approximately 10:12PM Yarmouth Police and Fire Department personnel were dispatched to the area of 817 Route 6A in Yarmouthport for a report of a pedestrian being struck by a motor vehicle.
Patrol Officers Mary Gibney and Patrol Officer Mellett arrived and found a 23 year old female lying on her side being comforted by a male. They both were dressed all in black. The male subject identified himself as a friend of the victim. He stated they were walking eastbound along the road, with their back to traffic, and suddenly she was struck by a car, which continued on towards Dennis. The male was unable to note anything about the car because he immediately looked to help the victim.
Police Officers interviewed a man who was traveling behind the pair and the vehicle that struck the victim. The man stated he was about a couple of telephone poles or so behind the vehicle when he saw it jerk in its lane and then accelerate away. As he approached that location, he saw what he thought was a black trash bag, but then realized that it was a person who had been hit. He wrestled with going after the car, but decided to stay with the victim. He was only able to report that the vehicle was traveling towards Dennis and that it was a car/sedan with square taillights.
The victim who declined medical treatment stated she believed it was the front of the car that struck her. It is possible that a side mirror struck her.
