COPS TACKLE ACCUSED MUGGER DURING WILD DOWNTOWN HYANNIS FOOT CHASE [HN VIDEO]
HYANNIS, MASSACHUSETTS – [HN VIDEO NOTES] – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, police working the downtown Hyannis area responded to a report of a mugging last evening. They met a middle-aged man who entered the CVS on North Street saying he had been robbed. The man had wounds to his head and face, including a large welt below his left eye from being hit in the head during the robbery. He appeared dazed and confused, telling officers he needed time to regain his bearings before pointing out where he had just been jumped. He was obviously having difficulty remembering and communicating what had happened.
Hyannis Rescue attempted to evaluate the man, but he refused treatment, appearing more concerned about finding his phone.
Officers and the victim returned to the area of North Street and Bassett Lane where the mugging allegedly occurred. They were looking for his phone on the ground when the victim pointed out his alleged attacker had returned and was about a block from where they were standing.
While attempting to make contact with the alleged mugger, officers could be heard over the radio announcing that the suspect was taking off from them… and that they were involved in foot pursuit. It was reportedly a brief, but wild chase as one of the officers was finally able to tackle suspect to the ground. HN arrived shortly after the suspect was detained in handcuffs.
Officers recovered the victim’s phone and watch. The suspect was transported back to Barnstable Police Headquarters where he was expected to be booked for Unarmed Robbery.
Officers were still very concerned about the victim’s injuries and tried to convince him to accept medical attention… or to at least apply ice to his welt … and they wished he would take it easy for the remainder of the evening. The victim was exceedingly appreciative for the officers’ efforts in recovering his property… and for making such a bold and daring arrest. He explained he did his best to get in a few gut shots against his attacker… and that he was in shock from everything happening so suddenly. He then assured officers he was okay and now focused on finding a good stiff drink to calm his nerves.
NOTE: The victim was adamant he didn’t know his alleged attacker…
