DISTRICT COURT: 38-year-old Marstons Mills male pleads guilty to strangling Barnstable Police Officer…
BARNSTABLE – On the charge of Strangulation or Suffocation of a Barnstable Police Officer, Dorian A Firth, age 38, of Marstons Mills, pleaded guilty this past Friday , 12/7/2018. On a second charge of Assault & Battery On a Police Officer, Firth also pleaded guilty.
Firth was sentenced to two years in jail for both offenses, with 90 days deemed already served, and the balance to be “suspended.”
Firth was also placed on probation until 12/4/2020, and ordered to remain drug and alcohol free.
Earlier this year on Friday, May 11, a Barnstable Patrolman responded to Cape Cod Hospital for reports of a male subject demanding medication, being verbally abusive, and threatening staff before leaving the hospital on foot.
The patrolman caught up to a man, later identified as Dorian Firth, about two blocks away, walking along the sidewalk in the East End of Main Street. Firth told the officer he was walking home to Marstons Mills.
The patrolman found Firth to be highly intoxicated and took him into protective custody.
Back at Barnstable Police Headquarters, Firth was booked and given a Breathalyzer test upon request, receiving a reading of .18 blood alcohol content. Firth was then given a blanket and placed in jail cell #5.
Later that evening, Barnstable Police Sergeant Kevin Tynan went to have a word with Firth after learning he was covering the jail cell camera and blocking dispatch from being able to keep an eye on him. Firth told the sergeant he was going to kill him, and that’s when the sergeant went to get another officer to help remove the blanket.
Firth was standing on top of a concrete bench as the sergeant and another officer entered the jail cell. As the officers approached, Firth jumped off the bench and grabbed the second officer around the neck, using his arm and forearm to squeeze the officer’s neck in a choke hold. A struggle ensued and both officers were able to quickly gain control of Firth and exit the cell, taking the blanket along with them.
Dorian Firth went from simply being in protective custody, to being charged with Strangulation and Assault & Battery on a Barnstable Police Officer…
… to which Firth pleaded guilty and was sentenced this past Friday.
