Driver Escapes Unscathed After Pickup Slams into Pole in W. Barnstable [HN Photos]

WEST BARNSTABLE, MASSACHUSETTS — An adult male driver escaped injury early Sunday morning after his pickup truck veered off Route 6A and crashed into a utility pole, snapping it in half and leaving the top section dangling from wires.
The crash occurred around 1 a.m. on February 15, 2026, at the intersection of Route 6A and Soft Shell Lane. Barnstable Police and West Barnstable firefighters rushed to the scene following reports of a single-vehicle collision with airbag deployment. Upon arrival, responders found the driver—the sole occupant—already out of the vehicle and ambulatory. He was assessed by rescue personnel on-site but declined further medical treatment.
Sources indicate the driver showed no signs of impairment. He was reportedly traveling from off-Cape to visit friends and was unfamiliar with the local roads. The exact cause of the loss of control remains unclear at this time, with the Barnstable Police Department actively investigating the crash.
The impact severely damaged the utility pole, breaking off the bottom portion while the upper half hung suspended above the roadway by electrical wires. As a precaution, Route 6A was fully shut down between Route 149 and Willow Street to allow Eversource crews to safely replace the pole.
The driver arranged an Uber to continue to his friend’s house.
The investigation was ongoing at the time of this report.

A woman was evaluated by rescue personnel during a traffic stop in Hyannis early Saturday morning. She ultimately did not require transport to a hospital and was eventually released from the scene to be driven home. It’s uncertain why she was on the ground in the photo above. The driver had been detained in handcuffs inside a cruiser when HN first arrived on scene. He was eventually released from custody. A female state trooper arrived on scene and spoke with the driver in what sounded like Portuguese. The driver was also eventually released from the scene.
The stop occurred at the intersection of Fresh Holes Road and Hiramar Road shortly after 1:00 a.m. Serious calls are not unusual in that particular neighborhood, but this traffic stop ended calmly without criminal charges after what may have been a rough start. One source speculated the woman’s issues with Earth’s gravitational pull may have been brought on by alcohol or some other substance… although nothing official has yet been released on the matter.
