YARMOUTH PORT, MASSACHUSETTS — A single-vehicle crash snapped a utility pole and knocked out power along Route 6A early this morning, leaving parts of the neighborhood dark while the driver faces criminal motor vehicle charges.

Yarmouth police and firefighters rushed to the area of 765 Route 6A around 1:30 a.m. after at least two calls came in. One woman reported a wrecked vehicle on her front lawn. The first officer on scene found a snapped pole and downed wires. Power went out across the area as generators kicked on. Homes without generators were left in the dark.

The adult male driver was not seriously injured. He was outside the vehicle and speaking with officers when Hyannis News arrived. Investigators did not observe signs of impairment. As a precaution, a Yarmouth Fire Department ambulance crew evaluated him and released him.

The patrolwoman leading the investigation requested both an accident number and an arrest number. Friends later picked the driver up from the scene. He will be summoned on criminal motor vehicle charges that could include negligent operation and a marked lanes violation. The crash remained under investigation, and no further details were available at the time of this report.

Route 6A was shut down as Eversource worked to fix the downed utility pole and restore power. Yarmouth Police hired detail officers to cover the road closure.

SIDEWALK STOP: Yarmouth Man Cuffed & Stuffed During 1 a.m. Hyannis Traffic Stop

A Barnstable Police impaired-driving specialist stopped a sedan traveling north on Barnstable Road just short of Chez Sanders — a.k.a. the Finger-Lickin’ KFC Lounge — shortly after 1 a.m. The vehicle had left the roadway and come to rest on the sidewalk . Hyannis News arrived as the driver was being placed in handcuffs, then photographed him being walked to the patrolman’s cruiser for transport to Barnstable Police HQ. Sources said he faces charges of operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and marked lanes violations. The arrest report was still being processed and no further details were available at the time of this report.

Around 2:30 a.m., responders were called to check on an intoxicated couple sitting on two toppled planters in front of Palio Pizzeria on Main Street in Hyannis. One half of the dynamic duo appeared passed out, according to radio transmissions.

The pair turned out to be fine — just really intoxicated — and caught a huge break when a sober friend showed up to take them home for the duration. They made out like bandits. The flowers, not so much.

The owner of Palio Pizzeria takes tremendous pride in keeping one of the cleanest, best-looking spots downtown, so it’s a shame those beautiful planters got toppled and tossed around. The male half of the couple did try to straighten up the damage before a buddy hauled him away.

Both were young adult locals. Aside from being gravity-challenged, they were polite and cooperative with responders. I believe they’ll come back and make it right with Palio. I’d be surprised if they didn’t. Should they shirk what’s right, police already ran and documented their names. Still, I’m highly optimistic they’ll return and take care of the damaged flowers.
