UPDATE: Police and other sources, including emergency radio transmissions, describe one of the vehicles as a “makeshift go-kart.”
COTUIT – DEVELOPING – According to a Cotuit FD press statement, at about 9:05PM last evening, firefighters responded to a report of fiery crash involving a motorcycle and some type of motor vehicle at the intersection of Rte. 28 and Geraldine Rd.
Upon arrival, firefighters found a “golf cart” upside down on the north side of Rte. 28 near the fog line, fully engulfed with flames.
Ambulances responded for a total of 3 patients. Two of the patients had life-threatening injuries, the third patient had serious injuries.
A Medflight helicopter was requested, but needed to be canceled because of the patients’ need for more immediate treatment. All three patients were rushed to CCH.
The two critical patients were said to be receiving immediate treatment at CCH and are expected to be eventually airlifted by helicopter to an off Cape trauma center.
Barnstable Police needed to close down Route 28 for a period of time while an accident reconstruction expert investigated the scene.
HN NOTE: According to emergency radio transmissions, the vehicle which had burst into flames was described as some type of “go-kart…” Other sources referred to it as a “golf cart.” There has also been some mention of the nearby power lines… with possibly other off road vehicles involved or discovered nearby at the scene… At this point it remains uncertain whether vehicles from the nearby power lines had anything to do with this scene… and nothing has been officially confirmed at this point. More details are expected to come out as the investigation unfolds.
The investigation was very active and ongoing throughout the late evening hours, with police still tracking down and interviewing witnesses or anyone involved in the accident, with two witnesses located at a Cotuit address early this morning… According to emergency audio, police also called for a flatbed for what were described as an abandoned ATV and two small motorcycles from the scene…
