SUSPICIOUS: Five first responders sent to CCH after possible Hazmat exposure… mass decontamination unit called in… [VIDEO]
HYANNIS – A HN camera was on scene as the Hyannis Fire Department deployed their mass decontamination unit across the street from the Cape Cod Hospital emergency room this morning at about 3:00am.
Five first responders from a scene in Wellfleet, one-by-one, were arriving by ambulance at CCH after possible exposure to a suspicious hazardous substance.
Cape Cod Hospital security was also prepared and assisted the FD by directing their patrols to the area… Security passed along information regarding a possible media staging area…
… nobody really knew the seriousness of the situation at that point, but it’s better to be safer than sorry.
Earlier, at about 2:00am, paramedics responded to Chequessett Neck Road in Wellfleet for a what was described as a routine medical call. Emergency workers were transporting a patient when they experienced an unknown smell that irratated their eyes and throat.
Wellfleet Fire Department Lt. Shawn Clark was unable to confirm or deny an emergency radio transmission referring to some type of chemistry set at the scene. One transmission mentioned the possible mixture of chemicals. At this time, the actual cause of the unknown chemical exposure at the residence has not been officially confirmed.
A Hazmat team resonded to the home and investigated potential hazards…
Any recent hazmat incident, however, raises legitimate questions…
Wellfleet police and fire officials were also unable to confirm or deny at this time whether or not this suspicious substance may have been related to the production of illicit drugs. The nature of the initial early morning medical call is uncertain. In recent months, Cape hazmat teams have taken precautions regarding incidents with chemicals involved in the production of crystal meth…
… HN will update and clarify as further official information is unearthed.
But we do know at this point that two police officers and three firefighters were taken to CCH and later released.
We also know the incident set off a chain of events and precautions designed to protect first responders, hospital staff, and the general public in the event of a dangerous hazmat situation.
After a period of time, hazmat personnel determined the home on Chequessett Neck Road was safe and that there was no threat to public.
Hyannis Fire Department mass decontamination equipment did not need to be fully set up. The unit was able to stand down and return to quarters, their services were not used after all.
