FLAMES: Dennis FD saves businesses from further damage… loose snow was the cause…
SOUTH DENNIS – At about 3:50pm, Dennis firefighters responded to the Ring Bros. Marketplace at 485 Route 134 for a report of a fire.
Workers at a neighboring business smelled and observed smoke on the rear roof next to D’Angelo’s and several other adjacent stores.
Dennis FD arrived and observed flames, quickly setting up command, while deploying a ladder from a ladder truck. A hose was stretched onto the roof and the flames were knocked down within 10 minutes.
According to sources, heavy snow had slid down the roof and severed a gas line to an air-conditioning unit… the AC unit’s motor then caught fire…
With the combination of leaking gas and fire, the situation could have been much worse. The busy marketplace was bustling with activity, with people oblivious to fire above their heads… If it wasn’t for the alert neighbors and a nifty response from Dennis FD, flames would have definitely spread further…

Police assist a woman who was out walking in snow without shoes or warm clothing…
HN was inside BPD Headquarters as police tried to reason with and get help for an emotionally distraught woman. She reportedly was not from the area and had been spotted walking in the snow wearing just her socks. Police became very concerned for her safety, especially since she appeared disoriented and was not dressed for the cold conditions. The woman was at first fearful of police, but officers patiently calmed her down, reassuring her she was safe. They eventually convinced her to voluntarily take a ride to CCH to be evaluated… Last word was she was safely out of the cold and receiving the help she clearly needed.
HN NOTE: Often we observe police taking on an enforcement role, but the truth is they spend most of there time dealing with individuals in varying stages of crisis. It takes training, experience, and skill to shift from a being an assertive law enforcer on one call, to a calm compassionate listener on the next call… Our officers, IMO, did an excellent job today. Good job BPD.
