HIGH SPEED BIKE CHASE: B&E suspect taken down after trying to hawk loot to actual owner of the stolen jewelry… owner works behind counter at store that buys jewelry… [VIDEO]
UPDATE: The following is NECN’s must-see coverage of this story… with additional details and interviews:
Initial HN coverage:
HYANNIS - Here are the basic details known at this point:
A suspect allegedly broke into a house on Pearl Street yesterday afternoon. Approximately $6500 in jewelry was stolen.
The suspect then allegedly took the stolen loot to a Cape Cod Mall store which purchases jewelry. The suspect then allegedly tried to hawk the stolen jewelry.
By pure chance, the woman working behind the counter was the actual owner of the stolen jewelry the suspect was trying to hawk... and it was her house that the suspect allegedly broke into.
Barnstable Police Patrolman Corey Frederickson investigated yesterday's B&E on Pearl Street. With the help of the victim, he was able to identify the suspect and put out a description.
The man they were looking for is also a suspect in other B&Es in the area...
Patrolman Frederickson was in the process of getting a warrant when the suspect was spotted on foot at the Cape Cod Mall this afternoon. Police converged on the Cape Cod Mall searching for the suspect.
Meanwhile, Patrolman Frederickson, who happened to be assigned to mountain bike patrol today, began peddling from the Main Street area toward the Cape Cod Mall.
After traveling numerous blocks, Patrolman Frederickson spotted the suspect riding a mountain bike away from the area of the Mall.
Patrolman Frederickson began to peddle after the suspect and hollared for him to stop. The suspect would not pull over and there was a brief high speed mountain bike pursuit.
Patrolman Frederickson eventually took the suspect down at taser point on Bearse Road behind Citizen's Bank. Officer Frederickson was able to take the suspect into custody without deploying his taser.
