On July 28, 2018 at 12:10 am, Barnstable Police were called to a head-on motor vehicle collision on Rte. 28 in Cotuit near the Mashpee town line. Preliminary investigation revealed a 2000 Toyota sedan, operated by a 22-year-old male from Fall River, with a 24-year-old female passenger from New Bedford, was traveling east on Rte. 28 when it collided head-on with a west bound 2012 GMC SUV being operated by a 32-year-old Mashpee man. The Fall River man was pronounced dead at the accident scene and his female companion was transported to Cape Cod Hospital in critical condition. The Mashpee man sustained severe injuries and was taken to South Shore Hospital where he later passed away. Rte. 28 in Cotuit was shut-down for several hours while the Barnstable Police Accident Reconstruction Team worked the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
Cotuit FD media statement:

Engines were dispatched from the Mashpee and Marstons Mills Stations and ambulances from the Cotuit, Mashpee and Centerville Stations. Upon location we found a two car accident with three patients. One vehicle was a large SUV with a single occupant who was pinned in the vehicle. The Occupant was extricated with the jaws of life and transported in a Cotuit Ambulance to the South Shore Hospital where they later died. The second vehicle was a Toyota passenger car which was split in two in the collision. The two occupants were ejected from the vehicle and the vehicle was on fire.
