*** WATCH *** Quincy man in custody after traffic stop escalates, meth discovered…
HYANNIS – [DEVELOPING] – As you will see and hear in the following HN Video, shortly before 3:00 a.m. this morning, a Barnstable Patrolman initiated a traffic stop on Route 28 near the intersection with Ridgewood Ave. He then approached the passenger side of a white sedan with New York plates, requesting another cruiser, but at that point emphasizing there was no rush.
The vehicle was occupied by two adult males. A second Barnstable Police Patrolman arrived and approached the driver’s side of the vehicle. Within moments the traffic stop escalated to where the patrolman on the driver’s side drew his service weapon, while the patrolman on the passenger side drew his Taser. Additional backup was requested, this time with more urgency. The sudden escalation happened while officers appeared to be having difficulty with the passenger. Officers asked him to keep his hands out of his pockets… and there was also mention of a knife.
The driver, however, appeared to be cooperating, walking back and placing his hands on the hood of cruiser.
There were a few tense moments as both patrolmen finally convinced the passenger to exit the vehicle calmly with his hands showing. The encounter ultimately ended peacefully as the passenger and the driver were both detained without further incident.
The traffic stop turned into a more involved situation as the officers’ investigation unfolded. Officers eventually brought in a drug sniffing dog to assist. A Barnstable Police Department drug sniffing dog arrived and sniffed both men. The dog is said to have alerted on the passenger, but not the driver. Officers then searched the vehicle, bagging various bits of evidence, including some cash.
There was also some talk as to whether the passenger was providing his true identity or not. A check on one the identities given came back to an individual with a lengthy record, including a history of gun charges. There was also mention of someone having warrants.
After all was said and done, the driver was allowed to leave with a traffic citation, while the passenger was taken back to police headquarters under arrest.
According to Sergeant Kevin Fullam, the passenger, Joseph Gomes, age 31, of Quincy was arrested on a total of 5 Default Warrants. Gomes was also charged with Possession of a Class B Substance when officers finally located a quantity of methamphetamine that had initially been alerted on by Yvonne, Sergeant Fullam’s drug sniffing K9 partner.
